With younger years the more they can associate the words with something physical the better. I like to throw a bean bag around the class randomly asking them to tell me something. For quick learners I may have the word slides up on the whiteboard screen or I use props, for the numbers 1-10 I use fingers.
The idea is that they concentrate on catching and wondering if they will be next.
The game goes like this, for the example I’ll use the numbers 1-10:
Hold up prop or show slide of vocabulary you want to practice. In this case ‘3’
Say the word ‘trois’
Hold up prop or show slide of vocabulary you want to practice. In this case ‘5’
Say “A toi….”
Hold up prop or show slide of vocabulary you want to practice. In this case ‘2’
Throw bean bag to an able student to make sure I got the right response
Student says ‘deux’. If they don’t get it right repeat my instructions again giving example.
Repeat going down to weaker students.
To extend this you can time it and split the class into teams to see which team can get the most right in the shortest time.
Not in teams just individually. Get them to throw it from one to the other to see if they can get the numbers right. Give the whole class a reward if they all get it right (or whatever your criteria is). This avoids chaos ensuing. Only do this with classes you know won’t get too excited about it and that will calm down after it.
